Careers Behind the Front Office: Exploring Financial Services Support and Specialist Roles
By Nick Coleridge-Watts
When people think about careers in financial services, the first roles that come to mind are often investment bankers, fund managers or traders. Yet behind every successful financial services organisation is a much broader network of professionals keeping the business organised, compliant, connected and moving forward.
From Executive Assistants and Investor Relations professionals to Operations, HR, Finance, Marketing and Research roles, the sector offers varied career opportunities for people with a wide range of skills and backgrounds.
For candidates considering financial services, understanding this wider landscape can open up career paths that may not previously have been on their radar.
Business Support: At the Centre of the Organisation
Business support professionals often work particularly closely with senior leaders and investment teams.
Executive Assistants, Personal Assistants and Team Assistants can manage demanding diaries, international travel, meetings and competing priorities, while Office Managers and operational support professionals help ensure the wider workplace runs effectively.
The pace can be high and expectations are often significant, making organisation, judgement, discretion and the ability to anticipate needs particularly valuable.
For the right person, these roles can provide considerable exposure to senior stakeholders and a detailed understanding of how a financial services business operates.
Investor Relations and Capital Formation
Investor Relations is an increasingly visible career path within financial services.
These teams help organisations build and maintain relationships with investors, supporting areas such as investor communications, reporting, fundraising activity, meetings and roadshows. Depending on the organisation, roles can range from Investor Relations Assistants and Coordinators through to Associates, Managers and Capital Formation specialists.
It can be an attractive area for candidates who combine strong communication and relationship-building skills with attention to detail and commercial awareness.
Operations and Compliance
While investment activity may attract much of the attention, strong operational infrastructure is essential to financial services businesses.
Operations, middle and back office professionals may support transactions, processes, client services and reporting, while Compliance professionals help organisations meet regulatory requirements and manage risk.
These careers can suit candidates who enjoy problem-solving, accuracy and working within structured environments. As experience develops, there can also be opportunities to move into more senior operational or specialist positions.
Finance and Accounting
Financial services firms also require strong internal finance teams.
Careers can range from Finance Assistant and Accounts roles through to Management Accountants, Financial Controllers and Finance Managers. While some positions require formal accounting qualifications, others can provide an entry point for candidates looking to develop their finance experience within the sector.
The environment can offer an interesting combination of technical work and exposure to commercially sophisticated businesses.
HR, Marketing and Communications
Not every financial services career is centred on numbers.
As firms grow, their people, culture and external profile become increasingly important. HR professionals may work across recruitment, employee relations, learning and development, reward or broader people strategy, while Marketing and Communications teams can support brand positioning, content, events and stakeholder communications.
For candidates already established within HR or Marketing, moving into financial services can offer the opportunity to apply their functional expertise in a different commercial setting.
Research, Associates and Analysts
Research and analytical skills are valuable across many areas of financial services.
Depending on the organisation, Associates and Analysts may work across commercial, investment, operational or research-focused assignments, using data and market information to support decision-making. VWA recruits across a range of Associate, Analyst and Research positions as part of its wider financial services recruitment expertise.
These roles can be particularly appealing to candidates who are naturally inquisitive, analytical and comfortable working with detailed information.
Do You Need Financial Services Experience?
Not always.
Previous sector experience can certainly be valuable, particularly for positions requiring specialist technical or regulatory knowledge. However, some employers are equally interested in transferable skills and evidence that a candidate can adapt to the pace and expectations of their environment.
Strong stakeholder management, discretion, organisation, commercial awareness and attention to detail can all translate well into financial services. Candidates moving from professional services, consultancy, legal, property, technology or other corporate settings may already have highly relevant experience.
The important question is not simply whether you have worked in financial services before, but how well your experience matches the requirements of the particular role and organisation.
Finding the Right Financial Services Career
Financial services itself is extremely varied. Working for a global investment business can feel very different from joining a boutique private equity firm, hedge fund, venture capital business, wealth manager or family office.
Understanding those differences can help you identify not only which role suits you, but which environment is most likely to support your longer-term career.
At VWA, financial services has been a core sector since 1989, and we recruit across Business Support, Investor Relations, Operations, Compliance, Finance, HR, Marketing, Research and other specialist functions.
If you are considering your next move, our Consultants can help you understand where your experience could fit, explore current opportunities and identify financial services roles aligned with your skills and career ambitions.
