Attracting high quality professionals in 2025 means being clear, consistent and candidate focused. The strongest individuals are not just looking for the best salary or most recognisable brand. They are looking for roles that offer purpose, progression and a working environment where they can thrive.

At VWA, we speak to candidates every day across business support, HR, marketing, operations and more. Here are five things they tell us they value most in a new role, and how employers can respond.

1. Clear communication from the start

Professionals want to know exactly what they are applying for. They are looking for clarity on the responsibilities, structure and expectations attached to the role. If a job brief is vague or shifts significantly during the process, many will lose interest.

What to do:
Be as specific as possible in the job description. If the role will evolve, explain how and why. Be prepared to answer detailed questions from engaged candidates.

2. A well-defined working pattern

Flexibility remains important, but it now looks different for each person. Some candidates are open to five days in the office, others are looking for a mix. What most want is transparency and predictability. They want to know what the pattern is before they apply, not at second interview stage.

What to do:
Set expectations early. If the role is four days in the office, say so. If there is flexibility in the future, explain how that will be reviewed and communicated.

3. A team culture that feels real

Candidates want to understand the day to day working culture, not just the company values written on the website. They are listening carefully for signs of how teams collaborate, how managers lead and how people are supported.

What to do:
Offer real examples of how the team works together. Introduce the people they would be working with if possible. If the environment is fast paced, explain what that looks like in practice.

4. A sense of development

Career progression does not always mean promotion. Many professionals are looking for the chance to take on responsibility, gain new skills or support different areas of the business. This is especially important in smaller companies where growth paths are not always formalised.

What to do:
Be honest about the development opportunities available. If the role offers scope for growth over time, explain what that might involve and how it has worked for others in the team.

5. A well-structured recruitment process

Candidates are looking closely at how the process is managed. Delays, unclear feedback or last minute changes can affect their view of the company. A smooth and professional experience builds confidence and strengthens interest.

What to do:
Plan the process in advance and communicate each stage clearly. Keep momentum where possible and provide timely feedback. If there are delays, let candidates know as soon as possible.

In summary

The strongest candidates have options. They are looking for roles that are clearly defined, well-structured and aligned with their values. Employers who invest in a thoughtful hiring process will attract better talent and create longer lasting hires.
