AI in Recruitment: Can You Spot the Covering Letter Written by AI?
The use of AI in the recruitment process is such a hot topic right now. There are countless articles online providing information on how AI can support a business in their recruitment, from writing job descriptions through to matching candidates to job profiles. If you are using LinkedIn to advertise jobs, well then you are already indirectly using AI! The same applies to candidates on their job hunt, with numerous tools available to help with anything from CV writing through to interview prep.
Does the increasing reliance on AI in recruitment make you nervous or excite you?? Have you personally tried using AI as a hiring manager or job seeker?
As part of the conversation, we thought it would be a fun and intriguing experiment to see whether you can spot which covering letter is was written by a chatbot and which one is written by a human.
Below are two covering letters written for an example job with all candidate and company names removed. Please note this is just an example, not a real covering letter!
Can you tell which is the robot and which is the human?
Covering Letter 1:
I am writing to express my sincere interest in the Executive Assistant position at XXX, as advertised on your company's website. Enclosed is my CV, showcasing my experience as a dedicated Executive Assistant with a proven track record in providing seamless support to Directors and senior management.
In my current role at XXX, I have demonstrated my ability to excel in a fast-paced environment by managing complex diaries, coordinating travel logistics, and providing crucial administrative support to a large team of employees. My experience in implementing efficient processes and ensuring compliance with health and safety matters aligns well with XXX’s dynamic and entrepreneurial culture.
As a Receptionist/Office Assistant at XXX, I honed my skills in creating a positive first point of contact, managing meeting rooms, and supporting consultants with various administrative tasks. My proactive approach and attention to detail have contributed to the success of high-profile events and the overall professionalism of the office environment.
With a background in Administration at XXX and customer-focused roles at XXX, I have developed a strong foundation in event coordination, invoice management, and compliance adherence.
I am impressed by XXX's commitment to employee well-being and diversity, and I am eager to contribute my organisational and administrative skills to your esteemed team. Thank you for considering my application. I am enthusiastic about the opportunity to discuss in more detail how my experience aligns with the needs of the XXX position.
Covering Letter 2:
I am writing to apply for the position of Executive Assistant at XXX, as advertised on your website. Please find enclosed my CV which highlights my relevant experience and proven track record as a dedicated Personal Assistant.
In my current role at XXX, I've excelled in managing complex diaries, coordinating travel logistics, and providing crucial administrative support to a large team of professionals. My background also includes a Receptionist/Office Assistant position at XXX, where I demonstrated skills in creating positive first impressions, managing meeting rooms, and supporting the team of consultants. I have a proactive approach and pay close attention to detail; attributes which have both contributed to the success of high-profiles events I have been involved in, and my overall professionalism amongst colleagues.
Further to this, I am highly experienced in event coordination, invoice management and compliance adherence, which my roles as an Administrator as XXX and customer-focused roles at XXX have enabled me to develop and hone.
Reading more about XXX’s commitment to employee well-being and diversity excites me further regarding the position and I am eager to contribute my organisational and administrative skills to the team. I would really appreciate the opportunity to discuss the role further as I feel it could be the perfect next step in my career.
